Most people fear “the fairy mushroom” known as Amanita Muscaria, thinking it is poisonous for human consumption. About 5 years ago, I learned about Amanita Muscaria as a possible mushroom for ritual and spiritual work, and ran into a large amount of “stop sign” warnings telling me to steer clear if I valued my life.
Before this, I’d only ever tried psilocybin mushrooms. The first time I tried psilocybin or “magic mushrooms” was in high school, roughly 27 years ago, and I was completely unprepared for what I would experience!
I had done absolutely zero spiritual work to prepare for my journey. And I had no clue what psilocybin’s purpose on this earth even was.
As a teenager, I just wanted another way to party, to blow off some steam. My friend and I took a dosage recommended to us by a random teenager I didn’t even know, and it was a hero dose.
We went to a party with a bunch more random teenagers we didn’t know and it wasn’t fun at all. The mushrooms made me paranoid and suspicious of everyone there, (although I was suddenly amazing at crossword puzzles and Mortal Kombat! LOL!)
In a nutshell, I hated the “high”. I thought I was losing my mind and resisted the effects of the mushrooms all night until I was finally home in bed.
I didn’t have any huge epiphanies. No mind-blowing shifts in consciousness. I actually didn’t even know that this is what this mushroom was for.
It was uncomfortable and my stomach felt like I had been poisoned. I kept praying to regain my mind as all sorts of confusing mindf***ery ensued. I writhed in pain and wished the strange visuals to leave until I was finally able to not so pleasantly “pass” the mushrooms on the toilet. I finally fell asleep around 5 a.m.

I vowed to NEVER do “magic” mushrooms again. Or, any “spiritual” or “magical” mushrooms for that matter, until 27 years later when I saw the well-known Amanita Muscaria mushroom featured on an Instagram account I followed.
The Instagram-er said she smoked Fly Agaric, as well as made a tea out of it for spiritual ceremonies. After smoking a mixture of Amanita Muscaria and a variety of other plants, she had a vision of her ancestors coming to her and asking for her help in crossing over to the other side.
The second I saw the picture of the Amanita Muscaria, a.k.a. Fly Agaric, I was mesmerized. It was as if the mushroom was calling to me. I couldn’t explain it, I just knew it was the mushroom I was supposed to work with in my own spiritual practices.
Since my near-death experience, I have practiced mindfulness meditation religiously, cleansed my body of toxins, and turned on my psychic gifts. As a result, my intuition is heightened, my dreams vibrant guideposts for my life.
Amanita Muscaria entered my thoughts, dreams, and social media feeds for several more weeks after that.
I decided to listen to my intuition and researched everything I could find online about the magical amanita muscaria mushroom, including where to buy it, and how others were preparing and microdosing (taking a very small dose of a substance to gauge its effects) amanita safely.
I found Amanita Dreamer’s website, and after several hours of combing through her videos online, I felt I had a good enough understanding on how to purchase, prepare, and microdose Amanita Muscaria safely.
Amanita Muscaria Use Throughout History
Dating back nearly 4,000 years, Amanita muscaria has been used by indigenous people from Siberia, Scandinavia, Eastern Europe, and Russia.
They consumed the gorgeous, iconic red with white spots mushroom for inflammation, sleep, pain relief, anxiety, and energy.
The indigenous people of Siberia were among the first known to harness amanita’s psychoactive effects in their ceremonies. This mushroom’s therapeutic and spiritual uses were well-known and revered amongst their communities.
The “Mario mushroom” also holds extreme significance in numerous mythologies and folklore across cultures such as “The Santa Claus” influence of the Fly Agaric mushroom.
Norse berserkers, also reportedly ingested Amanita Muscaria to achieve a trance-like in flow state during their battles.
Besides being the mushroom used in Super Mario and Assassin’s Creed, amanita muscaria is the widely used mushroom of many fairy tales. With many surmising it is the mushroom Alice is given to eat in Alice in Wonderland.
Amanita muscaria has also been identified as the possible ingredient for the highly revered drink, Soma, in which Vedic texts refer to a drink which produces “feelings of immortality” and “God-like consciousness”.
What Does Micro-dosing Amanita Muscaria Feel Like?
In my experience, Amanita muscaria is a very gentle mushroom compared to its more masculine counterpart mushrooms containing psilocybin.
Amanita is gentle and mildly euphoric. It taps me into spirit and helps me clairaudiently hear my spirit guides better.
If I have prepared a quick tea out of my already partially decarbed Amanita muscaria mushrooms, I receive a mild stimulating effect and mood elevation. A lot of times, I will clean and organize my home for a couple of hours after taking Amanita muscaria. (Which I normally hate to do!)
Once the stimulating effect wears off and the ibotenic acid converts to muscimol in your body, then you get the relaxing effects that are great for lulling you into a comfortable sleep.
Amanita muscaria also comes with something termed as “The Mushroom Voice” by Amanita Dreamer, especially to those who are very clairaudient, like me.
I can psychically “hear” the Amanita muscaria mushroom speaking to me like a wise, kind grandmother that wants to nurture and love my inner child.
This voice tells me to “go easy on yourself” and to “think kind thoughts about yourself”. It is very gentle and nurturing and helps me do inner child and self-love work in my spiritual and meditative practices.
Is Amanita Muscaria Safe For Human Consumption?
In my experience, amanita muscaria, amanita regalis, and amanita pantherina are very gentle mushrooms with super calming effects when ingested at low, or micro-doses. I have not, and do not plan to take a “hero dose” of this or any other mushroom ever again.
However, it is said that the difference between a medicine and a poison is the dosage and the frequency. There has been a LOT of chatter online about Amanita muscaria being unsafe for humans to ingest because of a study about ibotenic acid poisoning in rats.
The intention and purpose of this mushroom on earth is to heal our inner child wounds, open our hearts, and remind us to be nurturing and kind to ourselves first, then others.
Will Amanita Muscaria Make You Trip?
According to Minnesota Nice Ethnobotanicals, the amount needed to produce possible psychedelic effects (or a “heroic dose”) is listed and has been experienced by many people.
However, I’m squarely in the camp of “use caution” with this mushroom. I do not want or need to “trip” anymore. My vivid dreams and visions during my How to Reach Higher States of Consciousness during Meditation are plenty to scratch my spiritual growth itches.
5 Magic Hacks for Reaching Higher States of Consciousness
So, I microdose Amanita Muscaria, Amanita Regalis, and Amanita Pantherina. I test EVERY batch of mushrooms I receive with a very, very small dose initially because mushrooms grow wild. The specific amounts of the active compounds of ibotenic acid and muscimol in each mushroom you receive are complete unknowns. I highly suggest erring on the side of caution and being wise with anything you ingest that grows wild.
Then, I up the dose slowly until I find my perfect “microdose” that works well with my mind and body. Another word of caution, don’t mix alcohol, prescription or non-prescription drugs with Amanita. This mushroom is a gentle reminder that you are loved infinitely by the Universe.
When I microdose Amanita regularly, I feel it’s “magic” working while I sleep. At the low doses I take, I get lulled into a beautiful and natural sleep without the need for prescription or over the counter sleep aids. I am slightly aware that the mushroom is clearing away “all that no longer serves me” and is helping me heal from childhood pain and traumas.
When I wake up, I am aware that I’ve worked with this beautiful, gentle mushroom in my dream state, but I’m not sure exactly what I did with it, or how this magic happened. I just know that I feel better, lighter, and happier the next day!
Where Does Amanita Muscaria Grow?
You can find species of amanita, including muscaria all over the world with hotspots in the Pacific Northwest (Oregon and Washington), California, and Europe (particularly Siberia and Russia). There are also quite a few in New Zealand and some eastern states in the U.S. as well.
Amanita mushrooms need host trees to grow, such as pine, oak, spruce, fir, birch, and cedar, so search your local area foraging guides and websites for specific trees and places that other foragers are finding amanita muscaria or other varieties of amanita.
If you aren’t 100% certain if a mushroom you find is amanita muscaria or not, please, please don’t consume it.
Also, to avoid over-foraging, please don’t take ALL the amanita muscaria you find in nature. Part of foraging is to leave some for others, as well as the trees that these gentle mushrooms share nutrients with.
Where to Buy Amanita Muscaria Safely?
Because amanita muscaria has look-alikes, I always buy mine from this trusted amanita muscaria source. I am on their e-mail list and have come to know, like, and trust them as people who do as they say, and “walk their walk”.
This means that they consume their own amanita mushrooms, they buy from trusted sellers who know how to identify amanita muscaria, amanita regalis, and amanita pantherina properly, and they also let you know if batches are weaker or more potent before you buy.
Often, they’ll give a discount for weaker or less potent strains. I also like how they classify each batch as “energetically light”, “potent”, “powerful”, or some other descriptive words for making sure you know what you are buying.
How to Safely Prepare Amanita Muscaria Tea for Consumption
It is very easy to safely prepare amanita muscaria or any amanita variety tea for human consumption.
Here is where I found the tea recipe: https://howtodecarbamanita.com/decarb-tutorial
Here is a 2nd tea recipe: https://www.amanitadreamer.net/post/prepareamanita

The directions for the two tea recipes vary slightly, and I will leave it to you to decide which one you like better. I have personally tried many variations from these two recipes, as well as recipes and pH values (with a pH tester) from Reddit recipes, and can’t tell a difference between ANY of them! So, I just go with the simplest one!
After preparation of the tea, I let it cool, and then I strain it through a fine cheesecloth into a glass mason jars with wide mouths to get the extra mushroom bits out.
I then pour the cooled tea into plastic vials with measuring doses on the sides that took me for-e-ver to find! I place a couple into the fridge and freeze the remaining vials. A microdose for me is about 1/4 of one of the vials, so I personally take a very, very small dose, since I am extremely sensitive to plant medicines.
Again, I always want to exercise caution with new substances and each new batch to be on the safe and wise side of things. Treating your body and yourself gently and with love is part of what amanita has to teach, so use wisdom, respect, and reverence when consuming it.
Potential Risks and Side Effects of Amanita Muscaria
As with all substances, whether herbal, natural, or pharmaceutical – take with caution and reverence. Follow your doctor’s, herbalist’s, or holistic practitioner’s advice and always, always, start slowly to gauge your body’s response.
You can overtake and overdo most natural supplements as well as pharmaceuticals and over-the-counter medications.
Taking too high a dose of amanita muscaria for your body can produce gastrointestinal symptoms, vomiting, agitation, lethargy, and possibly death.
Educate yourself on the dangers and risks of amanita muscaria poisoning and learn to properly prepare it if you plan to consume it.
Use amanita muscaria, amanita regalis, and amanita pantherina with intention and always listen to and trust your body.
If you feel you have any life-threatening symptoms from taking any amanita mushroom, please immediately seek medical help.
If you are still uncertain, pray and meditate for using amanita muscaria safely and properly. Microdosing this beautiful mushroom species has had profound effects on my mental and emotional states.
