Sore throats are a common illness that can happen to people for various reasons. Sometimes they are caused by allergies, the flu, or a cold.

They may also be caused by an infection in your throat and tonsils.

If you have a sore throat and are looking for shockingly-quick and simple sore throat remedies, there are many things you can do to prevent it from getting worse!

Causes of a Sore Throat

Sore throats are caused by many things including, but not limited to, allergies, a cold or the flu.

Allergies can cause sinus pressure and irritation that spreads down into your throat causing inflammation.

A common illness such as the flu or a cold can also cause sore throats when you have coughing fits that irritate the lining of the esophagus, or throat.

Phlegm and mucous from a runny nose can also drip down the back of your nose and into your throat, further irritating your sore throat condition.

Symptoms of a Sore Throat

Some symptoms of a sore throat may include redness, discomfort, or pain when swallowing, as well as redness on or around your tonsils (the large round balls located on either side of your throat when looking into your mouth.

If you’re experiencing any of the above sore throat symptoms, there are many natural remedies that can help heal your sore throat at home!

1. Ginger

Ginger has been used for centuries for everything from stomach discomfort to soothing a sore throat naturally.

Gingers naturally warming properties help soothe the pain and inflammation, and has been found to have antibacterial properties as well! (Azelan, et al., 2015)

So if your sore throat is caused from bacteria, such as the common cold, ginger will help fight it as well as soothing your throat!

Ginger tea is my go-to natural remedy for a sore throat and can be made by boiling water and adding a bag of organic ginger tea to it to steep for roughly 5 minutes.

Add some raw, organic honey to sweeten, and say, “Ahh” to natural throat soothing!

2. Gargle with Warm Salt Water

Gargling or drinking warm salt water is my favorite, and simplest way to soothe a sore throat fast!

Warm water soothes while the salt in the water can draw excess fluid from an inflamed throat, which helps alleviate the pain.

Gargling with warm salt water can also help clear out and loosen thick mucus, which helps remove things like bacteria, allergens, and fungus – Therefore easing sore throat symptoms. (O’Conner, n.d.)

Table salt is NOT recommended for this home remedy, to do a warm salt water gargle, simply heat water to a desirable temperature.

Add 1 Tbsp. of Sea Salt, or Himalayan Pink Salt. Stir while letting the salt dissolve into the water.

Fill your mouth with the same amount you’d use for mouthwash, and tip your head back while gargling the warm salt water all around the back of your throat.

Repeat as often as needed to ease sore throat symptoms!

3. Raw Organic Honey

Honey can also be used to alleviate the symptoms of a sore throat. (Smith, Charlotte M.D. 2020)

ALWAYS use raw, organic honey when possible, which has many antibacterial properties and can help soothe your throat’s pain.
